Kikumatsuri: A Floral Symphony Honoring 150 Years of Japan-Belgium Relations

In 2017, we had the privilege of designing the Chrysanthemum Festival (Kikumatsuri) in the Japanese Garden of Hasselt—a celebration of 150 years of diplomatic relations between Japan and Belgium. This project wasn’t just about showcasing flowers; it was about weaving artistry, tradition, and symbolism into a seamless narrative.

Never before had chrysanthemums been presented so masterfully in this garden into four different visions. Each artistic creation reflected Japanese stories, Zen philosophies, and a deep respect for nature.

With the help of six nationalities, including floral champions from Europe, and the esteemed Japanese master Naoki Sasaki, the designs honored Japanese customs and philosophies. Floating floral installations, kimono-inspired arrangements, and a breathtaking finale combining photography and floral art told a story of longevity, harmony, and duality, inspired by the symbolism of chrysanthemums.

This project exemplifies my approach to floral design: creating experiences that go beyond the visual to engage the heart and spirit. Let me help bring this level of artistry and meaning to your next event.
